Kopi Luwak: Authentic Civet Coffee

Trung Nguyên is the premier producer of Vietnam's finest locally owned and processed coffees grown in the ideal conditions of the Vietnamese highlands.

TN coffees are fairly traded, certified EUREPGAP (safe & sustainable agriculture) coffees brought to market directly by the producers.

The rare and exotic Kopi Luwak (sometimes translated as weasel coffee) is renowned all around the world for its incredibly delicious, subtle, lingering flavor and exceptional smoothness. Trung Nguyen's premium coffee Legendee set out to imitate the intense richness of real civet coffee, and it is a good substitute, but if you've ever been curious about this unique coffee, you deserve to try the real thing.

Kopi Luwak, or literally, "Civet Coffee", is "processed" by the Indonesian Civet, who populates the coffee-growing areas and comes out nightly to feast on only the ripest of the coffee cherries. The beans do not digest and are collected daily by farmers, who thoroughly sanitize the beans, and then dry them in the sun. Then the beans are roasted and vacuum packed for shipping.

Genuine Kopi Luwak coffee beans release hidden flavor compounds from the beans that are never accessed by regular roasting and brewing. These wonderful, locked-away flavors are released because of the natural enzymes of the civet.

Although the coffee is expensive per pound, a cup of home-brewed Kopi Luwak actually costs less than an average cup of brewed coffee bought at a café like Starbucks. Our direct personal relationship with the producer allows us to offer one of the world's greatest culinary treasures at an exceptional value! We receive frequent small shipments of Kopi Luwak; if we sell out, we will receive a new shipment soon, so don't despair.

As with all our products, we stand behind our Kopi Luwak and absolutely guarantee its quality and authenticity. We have been dealing in Southeast Asian coffee for years and we take great pride in our spotless reputation. Our Kopi Luwak is guaranteed 100% genuine and delicious civet coffee.

Sumatran Kopi Luwak

kopi luwaks on a farm treated like pets and given coconut milk On our Sumatran civet farm, located in the Lampung province, civets dine on a fine strain of Arabica Typica, producing a bright and light-bodied brew, absolutely free of any bitterness, with a truly incredible and persistant aftertaste. We have never experienced a coffee with such a delightful aftertaste, drifting back into your awareness like a pleasant daydream and taking you once again to coffee nirvana.

Farmed civets are kept in cages at night but allowed to roam protected courtyards during the day, where they can "forage" for the coffee beans hidden for them to find by the farmers. The farmer selects beans for the civet to eat. The civets become quite tame and can be handled and accept treats from their caretaker's hand, and their population is preserved by the farm's breeding programs.

How is this coffee different from Coffee Alamid?

Phillippines Kopi Luwak
  (Coffee Alamid)

Phillipines kopi luwak coffee Alamid "Alamid" (pronounced ah-la-MEED) is the Filipino word for the coffee civet. We are certified distributors of Arengga coffee, which includes Coffee Alamid. This is authentic civet coffee, gathered in the forested regions of the Philippines from the rare wild civet variety Paradoxorus Philippinensis. Wild civets freely select their own coffee berries and live in their native habitat, but are vulnerable to hunting. Coffee Alamid supports the livelihood of the forest dwellers and helps protect the civets and their habitat - and it is delicious!

This coffee is the first civet coffee we tried, the one that made us determined to offer civet coffee in our store. It's a slightly darker roast than the Sumatran kopi luwak, and is a multi-species blend, giving it a sweet, full-bodied, complex and slightly chocolaty taste with a clean finish.

How is this coffee different from our Sumatran Kopi Luwak?

  • Wild civets
  • Blended from multiple coffee species
  • Darker roast
  • Richer, more complex flavor
  • Less emphasis on aroma

Liberica Gold - Philippines Kopi Luwak by Arengga

Liberica is a vanishing species of coffee that is only now being brought back from the brink of extinction. Its almond-shaped beans have an exceptional aroma, almost floral and fruity, while its flavor is full and slightly earthy. Kopi Luwak Liberica is a great way to enjoy Liberica because the Luwak process brings out even more of the rich, full body of the Liberica.

When you drink this coffee, not only are you experiencing what is truly the world's rarest coffee (the rarest bean, made using the rarest process), but you are also helping to preserve a heritage coffee species that even now fights for its continued existence, as well as the indigenous Luwak civet who dines on its juicy cherries and the local farmers who have cultivated the coffee and protected the civets for generations.

100% Pure Liberica Coffee (non-Kopi Luwak)

We have secured a small supply of the indigenous Liberica coffee, known locally in the Philippines as kapeng barako, which is grown in the Batangas region. The original stocks were brought to the Philippines as early as the 1500s. Almost extinct at one point, the kapeng barako has been saved partly by government initiatives and local efforts, both economic and environmental; it remains a rare specialty of the Philippines.

Liberica coffee is not only the world's most unique coffee in terms of physical characteristics (huge beans grown on tall trees), but stands poised to effect great economic and environmental changes in the Philippines and beyond. The Liberica has similar earthy tones to Sumatran Arabicas but also bright tones and persistant aftertaste. The taste is superb and smooth, very mildly bitter, and easy on the stomach. It's dark and nuanced like a fine Port wine. It's a fabulous cup.
